bio-familia Sustainability Report 2024
bio-familia publishes 2024 sustainability report and renews commitment to sugar reduction
With the publication of its 2024 sustainability report, the Müesli producer from Sachseln shows how it is moving step by step towards net zero. The current Bronze rating from EcoVadis recognises this ongoing journey. bio-familia has also renewed its sugar reduction pledge with the Swiss Federal Council – underlining its long-standing commitment to the health of both people and the planet.
The 2024 sustainability report highlights how the Müesli pioneer from Sachseln continues to focus on climate action, public health and social responsibility – guided by a materiality analysis.
Responsibility with a system: SBTi targets
bio-familia voluntarily aligns its climate targets with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). In the reporting year, the company made clear progress along its defined reduction pathway. In total, bio-familia generated 32,087 tonnes of CO₂e in 2024 – a 3% reduction compared to the previous year.
EcoVadis Sustainability Rating
In July 2025, bio-familia was awarded a Bronze medal in the EcoVadis sustainability rating – placing the company among the top 35% in its industry. The assessment covers environmental impact, working conditions, ethics and sustainable procurement. "The rating helps us move forward – step by step," says CEO Daniel Lutz.
For bio-familia, EcoVadis is a valuable tool to make progress visible and keep pushing ahead.
Climate action in practice: measures for 2025
In the coming months, bio-familia will focus on several key levers to reduce CO₂e emissions:
- Converting a band oven to run on green electricity – saving 100 tonnes of CO₂e per year
- Using recyclable mono-material films for Müesli packaging on selected products
- Ensuring transparent sourcing and risk assessments for sensitive ingredients like chocolate and coconut
- Publishing the CO₂e footprint of familia Müesli in the online shop
- Supporting regenerative agriculture in Switzerland
- Targeted employee development and training
Sugar reduction pledge renewed
On 21 August 2025, bio-familia – together with Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider and twenty other Swiss food companies – officially renewed the Milan Declaration from 2015.
The voluntary commitment aims to reduce added sugar in breakfast cereals by a further 10% by 2028, compared to the 2024 median target of 11.5 g per 100 g.
"We’re well on track with our familia Müesli. We continuously optimise our recipes and develop new products that contain less sugar while still delivering great taste. As a company rooted in healthy nutrition for the whole family, this is simply part of who we are," says CEO Daniel Lutz.
