Brief explanation of climate-related terms
The scopes describe different categories of a company’s greenhouse gas emissions:
Die Scopes beschreiben verschiedene Kategorien von Treibhausgasemissionen eines Unternehmens:
- Scope 1: direct emissions – from sources directly controlled by the company
- Scope 2: indirect energy emissions – the result of the company’s energy consumption
- Scope 3: other indirect emissions – all indirect emissions generated along the company’s entire value chain
Corporate carbon footprint – the entirety of a company’s impact on the climate
A company’s corporate carbon footprint (CCF) or climate footprint describes the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions caused directly or indirectly by the company’s business activities.
CO2 is the unit of measurement for climate protection
CO2e (CO2 equivalent) is the unit of measurement with which we measure and compare the climate impact of various greenhouse gases, such as CO2, methane and nitrous oxide. This enables us to better understand the impact of our activities on the climate, work out our carbon footprint and set clear reduction targets.
What is SBTi?
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is an international climate initiative that calls on companies to set voluntary climate targets.
These science-based targets determine to what extent and by when companies need to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in order to limit global warming to 1.5°C, in accordance with the Paris Agreement.
In short, SBTi supports companies in aligning their climate protection efforts with scientific findings. In turn, it helps them to make a measurable contribution to global climate protection.
