Sustainable packaging
Packaging accounts for 10 % of our total carbon footprint.
Our packaging strategy is: avoid, reduce, replace, and recycle materials.
Avoid, reduce or replace material
We keep our packaging material to a minimum wherever possible. However, protecting our products remains our utmost priority. After all, what is the impact of a product that goes off within a short space of time? Food waste! And that’s what we want to avoid.
Recycling
We look for more environmentally friendly alternatives in instances where we cannot yet avoid or reduce packaging. Together with our suppliers, we keep a constant eye on new developments on the market. The recyclability of packaging materials is the top priority.
Some measures we’ve implemented include:
- Reducing the foil thickness in our single-portion bags thanks to our new packaging system
- Minimising the use of packaging with triple bonded aluminium
- Replacing aluminium barriers in foil packaging with alternatives
- Using thinner cardboard for large folding boxes
- Removing plastic spoons from top cups
- Cardboard for our folding boxes consists of up to 95 % recycled fibres from sorted waste paper with a post-consumer proportion of 50 %. 5 % of the cardboard comes from virgin fibres from FSC-certified sources
- Top cups made from pure PET can be recycled using the relevant collection system
What challenges are we currently facing?
Our products are packed in a protective atmosphere, which ensures a high level of freshness and quality until the end of their shelf life. To achieve this, the foil used in the packaging must be completely airtight. We are currently achieving this by using a laminated foil with a barrier layer.
We are looking for suitable solutions for a recyclable monofilm with a barrier layer and testing them at our facilities. We are confident that we will soon be able to unveil a sustainable solution here as well.
